Riverside High School will offer the same student exchange program that has become an important part of Herron High School’s culture. Since 2010, scholars have been traveling to Tlaxcala, Mexico, studying at Instituto Independencia, immersed in the Spanish language, living with host families and attending school with their host student. Riverside High School students are participating in the program for the first time this year.
As a result of participating in this Exchange Program, RHS scholars gain confidence and proficiency in Spanish. The experience is unforgettable and gives scholars a taste of the world beyond Herron High School and Indiana.
Our exchange program is a month-long experience for scholars (chosen in the Fall). Scholars travel to Tlaxcala, Mexico, for two weeks over Spring Break. Once they return, scholars host the Mexican students in the United States for two weeks.
In 2014, the program expanded to a semester exchange and in September 2016, the Herron High School Advance Choir traveled to Tlaxcala and performed around Central Mexico. Since its inception, this program has exchanged more than 100 students. Riverside High School students participated in the Tlaxcala Canta program this year.
To be considered for the month-long exchange, scholars must:
Submit an application with an essay due in early December
Participate and pass a home visit
Pass a family background check
Attend information meetings
The total cost of the monthly exchange trip is $1,250 per student and it is paid for by families. This total includes airfare, event admissions, etc.
